Lincoln's Birthday Event

Category: Events

In honor of Abraham Lincoln’s birthday, the Women’s Bar Association of Illinois is pleased to join other major Chicagoland bar associations in co-hosting a free reception on Monday, February 13th to welcome to Chicago two of the world’s most acclaimed anti-slavery leaders: Biram Abeid and Brahim Randhame of Mauritania, West Africa.  Called Slavery’s Last Stronghold by CNN, Mauritania did not criminalize slavery until 2007 – and its weak laws against the practice are seldom enforced.  Slavery in Mauritania is race and descent based and exists in a form chillingly similar to that which existed in the United States prior to the Civil War.  Women and children suffer the most from its brutality.

The legal community in the “Land of Lincoln” is proud to partner with the Chicago-based Abolition Institute to welcome these heroes who are working to turn the tide towards freedom in their country. Click here to RSVP to this powerful, informative event which will take place at the Latham & Watkins LLC Conference Center at 330 N. Wabash #2800 in Chicago at 5:30 PM on Monday, February 13th.  For more information contact [email protected] or visit www.StoppingSlavery.org/Lincoln
